Bio-control Programmes in Sydney Region

Bitou Bush and Boneseed Bio-control:

NPWS released the skeletonising Leaf-rolling moth (Tortrix) in Sydney North in October 2001 as part of Weedbuster Week. The release site was at Barrenjoey Dunes in Palm Beach.

Further releases were made on the Peninsula in September 2002. Locations were:

Ku-ring-gai Chase NP Lion Island and the Barrenjoey sandspit
Pittwater Whale Beach, Careel Head, North Avalon Beach and North Newport Beach
Warringah Long Reef

The Tip Moth has also been released in Sydney North. This was several years ago in Pittwater and Warringah and is now well established, notably at Avalon Dunes and Long Reef.

Bridal Creeper Bio-control:

Leaf hoppers (Zgina) have been released in the following areas:

Parramatta Council
1999
Hornsby Council
2001
Pittwater Council at North Newport Beach
2002

Avalon Primary Public School Year 3 students assisted this programme by growing on the Leaf Hopper larvae in classroom terraria

Hornsby Council also released a rust agent in 2001 which is showing promising results.

Salvinia Weevil has been released in Pittwater at the Warriewood Wetlands
