Declaration of Privet as a Noxious Weed throughout the Sydney Central Region

The Sydney Central Regional Weeds Committee is currently working towards a consistent declaration of Privet (both Small Leaf Privet and Broad Leaf Privet) throughout the region. This serious environmental weed is already declared throughout northern and north-western Sydney.

Previously, Privet was only declared a noxious weed in the following council areas in the Sydney Central region:
• Ashfield Council
• Hurstville City Council
• Kogarah Council
• Rockdale City Council

From 1 March 2006, Privet has been declared in the following council areas, after applications to the Dept of Primary Industries were approved:
• Auburn Council
• City of Canada Bay
• City of Canterbury
• Leichhardt Council
• Randwick City Council
• Strathfield Council
• Sydney City Council

Remaining councils in the region are now working towards a similar declaration. Privet is classified as a Class 4 weed under the new Noxious Weeds Act 1993.

Privet has been described as one of the worst environmental weeds in the Sydney region. Its declaration as a noxious weed assists in its removal on private land and helps reduce its spread into Sydney's bushland areas.
